Mini Quilt Plume

I had picked up a copy of Quilting Arts magazine a little over a week ago. Inside was an article about the "Reader's Challenge". Every issue they have a quilt challenge for their readers. The theme this issue was, 'Birds of a Feather'.

I liked the idea of entering the contest, even though I was already knee deep in other projects. Looking at the entry deadline, I realized I had only eight days to complete and email pictures of a 9in x 9in quilt. This should have shocked me back into reality that there was no way I could complete this task, but instead I felt even more motivated to create something. Oh, and did I mention, I was also leaving town for a week-long vacation in Arizona?

I'm still not sure how I did it, but to my surprise, I completed the quilt in time. I didn't get selected as a finalist, but that's okay. I'm so proud of the piece that I created. It will get a proper hanging sleeve and be displayed in my craft room.

The mini quilt is called 'Plume'. It depicts several types of bird feathers. I used raw edge applique, embroidery and hand quilting to complete the quilt. If you look, you'll notice that the arrangement of the feathers make what almost looks like a dragonfly. (That was completely by accident and I didn't realize it until I was editing the pictures).
