The War Quilt Now Looking Very Civil

I've been busy working on the Civil War inspired quilt. The top is now done. I decided not to use the boarder pieces. I think I like this piece without the added boarder.

Quilt laid out on a twin bed

As you can see, my corners do not line up, which is one of the things I actually love about this quilt. I'm not good with perfection. I rather like things a little 'off the mark',

Love some of the seams being 'off the mark'

I am now thinking about the backing and binding for the quilt. For the backing, I want to go with a vintage-looking deep red or deep blue fabric. For the binding, I am thinking of just a solid black binding.

Now on to the backing and binding

A Civil War Inspired Quilt

This is the quilt that I am currently working on. I found these quilt pieces as I was digging through my fabric stash. I sort of remember working on it. I had saw a quilt like this in a book about blacks serving in the civil war.

I didn't have any kind of a pattern for the quilt. I just cut out the pieces by hand based on how I thought the quilt was put together.

The fabrics are a combination of brushed polyester, denim and upholstery cotton.  I'm wondering why I choose these fabrics. Being a poor college student, I'm thinking they are remnant pieces that I bought on clearance at Joann's or Hancock fabric.

Two rows of this quilt have already been pieced together and it looks like I had planned on using small rectangles of fabric sewn together as the boarder.

I'm not sure what originally inspired me to want to make this quilt, but looking at it now, I'm feeling compelled to complete it, to see what the finished piece will look like.
